4. Bloody Roar
The Bloody roar franchise, originally Beastorizer, was one of the few fighting games I indulged in as a child. While I’d play the demo of Tekken, not many of us bothered with games of a similar vain. I know, blasphemy, for not playing mortal Kombat, sorry! My first experience with this game was Bloody Roar 2. The game was what you’d expect of the time, side view of the combatants then button mash the crap out of controller and opponent alike. The franchise spanned roughly a decade, six years is close enough, from it’s first release as an arcade, then playstation game in 1997. The gimmick of this franchise was each fighter was a zoanthrope, which is a fanciful term for were-creature. While some characters (the mole kid) were needlessly OP and near enough impossible to beat (I certainly sucked eggs when it came to fighting anyone playing the damned character). It was an enjoyable game and while it lacked the gore of Mortal Kombat or popularity of that franchise and Tekken, it makes it onto my list as a nostalgic favourite.
