Marvel has blown up in a big way in mainstream pop culture over the last few decade. Back in 2008, it kickstarted a cinematic universe rivalled by no other with the release of the blockbuster film, Iron Man. Since then, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU for short, has seen a total of 12 films released, with even more on the horizon and beyond. One area where Marvel has been lacking somewhat in recent years, however, is in the department of video games. To celebrate the upcoming release of Captain America: Civil War, here is a list of the Top 5 video games Marvel NEEDS to develop, stat!
FIVE – Black Panther
First up, we have the Black Panther A.K.A T’Challa, a total badass African superhero hailing from the fictional country of Wakanda. In the Marvel Universe, the Black Panther is the title handed down from ruler to ruler of Wakanda, and with it comes great power from Bast, the Panther Goddess [granted by eating a special plant poisonous to most non-Wakandans]. In recent years, T’Challa’s sister Shuri has assumed leadership of the country of Wakanda, whilst he became king of the Necropolis [Wakandan city of the dead, where Black Panthers go to die], allowing him to commune with the past Black Panthers & assume their knowledge and power.
Another awesome thing about Black Panther is his home country of Wakanda. Wakanda is the MOST advanced country on Earth, and blends this advanced technology with the more traditional, tribal nuances of small African countries. This could make for an amazing world for players to explore, especially if the developers put a lot of effort into the detail of the environment.
So, how would a Black Panther game work, you ask? Well, like most of the proposed games on this list, it would greatly benefit from being based in an open-world setting. Whilst Black Panther has had a major role in American superheroics, it would be in Marvel’s best interests to take full advantage of T’Challa’s unique homeland. The game could task players with protecting the denizens of Wakanda from dynamic events, such as attacks from rival tribes, the forces of Atlantis [the ruler of Atlantis, Namor the Sub-Mariner, has a very rocky relationship with T’Challa in the comics, as they find themselves at war with one another], supervillains [such as Rhino & Klaw]. The game could also feature a challenge mode of sorts, in the form of international heroic endeavours [for example, travelling to the US to track down a fleeing criminal, or to aid a fellow Avenger]. The game’s story could be wholly original, or could be adapted from a story arc such as “Who Is The Black Panther”. In terms of progression, characters should be able to level up T’Challa along two separate skill trees: the first being ability, improving upon their strength, stealth, speed and the likes. The second tree would, naturally, be tech, as T’Challa is ranked among some of the SMARTEST men in the world, up there with Tony Stark, Reed Richards & Doctor Doom. Combat here would most likely benefit from some variation of the predator combat system from the Batman: Arkham series.
