Things I love and hate about… Dark Souls 3

Hate – Optional Content and Areas Lacking

p1_2061571_b7265108

Demons Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2 and Bloodborne are all packed suitably with optional content, hidden bosses and areas you may otherwise never come across. Think about Ash Lake, Cainhurst Castle or The Pursuer fights. Each previous game is brimming with such places and enemies to be discovered and this is an area I can’t help but feel is lacking in the newest entry. There are around three different truly optional areas and while each is certainly worth finding and experiencing it just seems a little paling in comparison. One way this seems to be compensated for is the abundance of mini bosses you can choose to take on or avoid but this is in no way a better choice.

Development costs and production values are certainly a factor in this regard; if you compare the visuals of the original game to those of Dark Souls 3 the difference is stunning and naturally this has an impact on how much the developers fit in. This doesn’t necessarily make it an excuse though with Bloodborne launching in 2015 and having at least 6 optional areas which is double just a short year ago.

What do you think?
