What we want to see at E3 2017

 Vampyr (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

DontNod’s upcoming game couldn’t be further away from the pastel hued teenage -time travel drama of sleeper hit Life is Strange. Taking place in a post World War One London ravaged by the Spanish Flu pandemic, Vampyr tells the story of Jonathan Reid, a newly risen vampire, awoken in a city of turmoil. Whilst focusing heavily on narrative interaction, Vampyr also features smooth and brutal combat, where you can call down all manner of supernatural powers to crush those that oppose you. Be careful with all that killing though, as your decisions and choices throughout the game will affect not only the course of the story, but the very fate of the citizens of London. Although a few demos have already been released, it would be great to see a bit more of this gothic story at E3 2017.

Death Stranding (PS4)

Industry legend Hideo Kojima is back in the game, and he’s bought Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelson along with him. His latest project, bizarre sci fi/ oil slick/ skeleton soldiers/sea food mashup Death Stranding has so far only been seen in two enigmatic teaser trailers. Judging by the level of hype that surrounds it, as well as the amount of publicity Sony made about their acquisition of the Metal Gear mastermind, hopefully we’ll see some actual gameplay this year. Death Stranding is going to be a uniquely weird game, and it makes sense that Sony would continue to stoke the hype train all the way. The game might be a long way off (with Kojima admitting that development was still in early stages), but a longer glimpse of his stunning sci-fi world would be amazing.

The Last of Us: Part 2 (PS4)

Here it finally is. The most anticipated game that nobody wanted. It speaks volumes to the quality of Naughty Dog’s modern classic, The Last of Us, that, despite its’ popularity, nobody wanted a sequel. The game stood too well on its own, the story of Joel and Ellie reaching a solid conclusion. But when the surprise teaser dropped during the Playstation Experience in December 2016, we all realised that, actually, we did want a sequel. The Last of Us: Part 2 takes place around five years after the first game, players controlling a nineteen year old Ellie on a mission of bloody revenge. Creative director Neil Druckmann promised a drip feed of info on the game throughout 2017, so expect to see at least another teaser at E3.

Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4/Xbox One)

Now this one is a huge gamble. Even though they’re one of the biggest game developers out there, Rockstar have never been known for their E3 appearances. Instead of showing up at last years conference as was rumoured, the first Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer premiered after a sudden flurry of social media posts back in October 2016. The minute long teaser set the internet ablaze despite only showing mysterious shots of beautifully rendered forests, deserts, and hardy frontier towns. Rockstars’ cowboy classic remains unmatched in the open world stakes, and it would be amazing to see a longer trailer, (and perhaps even some actual gameplay) presented in all its glory at E3 2017.
