It’s that time of the year that every video game connoisseur looks forward to – yup, we’re officially in E3 week, and it’s off to a strong start. Ubisoft, EA, Microsoft, Bethesda and Sony have all held their press releases already [Nintendo will be hosting a digital event tomorrow], and we’ve seen plenty of new footage for previously announced titles, as well as some awesome new reveals. And while all the conferences certainly had their moments, I definitely feel like Sony truly knocked it out of the park today. Simply put, it was an excellent presentation.
The event began with an epic music piece performed by a full orchestra, led by the composer of the soundtrack for the new God of War game… oh yeah, there’s a new God of War game!
God Of War
The show went straight from the musical performance into a stunning first look at a new God of War title, simply called God of War [no ‘Four’ in the title], featuring ten whole minutes of gameplay! The game looks truly beautiful, taking full advantage of the PS4’s graphical power, and will undoubtedly look even more amazing when complete. The demo showcased Kratos taking his son [presumably. The boy never refers to Kratos in a way that confirms his father, but then the question of why Kratos spends his time yelling at young children is certainly one worth discussing] on a hunt for a deer, in order to teach him how to kill [and “get ready for what comes next”]. It is unclear how the boy factors into the gameplay, but there is certainly a possibility that this is simply a tutorial scenario, with players taking control of the boy after he’s aged, as there is a moment in the segment that actually has players aim the bow and send an arrow flying into a deer whilst the boy is holding it, so this could be some kind of hint. Or maybe not. Not much is known about the new God of War title, but fans are certainly hoping more information becomes available later in the week at E3.
Days Gone
After SIE Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden came out and gave a touching tribute to the victims in Orlando’s recent mass shooting, fans were presented with the reveal of a new title from BEND Studios, titled Days Gone. While fans were given an extended gameplay preview later on in the conference, there was only a trailer shown at this point. And then Days Gone was revealed to be a zombie game. Damn. Don’t get me wrong, there are some great zombie games out there, but it is really starting to feel like quite a bloated genre full of generic experiences. Though, with the character describing himself as a bounty hunter/mercenary, perhaps we could see a new take on how the player interacts in a post apocalyptic, zombie-ridden world.
The Last Guardian
If I were to say “Name one Playstation game that has been delayed so many times you aren’t even sure it will really ever see the light of day”, chances are you would instantly think of the long-awaited title, The Last Guardian. But this year, that all changes. Sony revealed a brand new trailer for the constantly delayed game, and really brought the house down when they revealed an official release date of October 25th, 2016! They did it, people – they gave us a goddamn date! Here’s hoping we get a bit more of a look at the actual game during the next few days at E3.
