5 reasons Sony just killed the PS4

Tonight at a press event in New York Sony announced the PS4 (slim) and the PS4 Pro but in doing so has effectively killed its market leading console.

Expectations were high and hype was at an all time high, however the reality of what has been delivered by Sony this evening is nothing short of a gigantic failure and unforced error on their part. Having led the console market for the past 3 years at a canter the shift from E3 2016 with the Xbox One S & Scorpio announcements have started to reveal some long term cracks in the Playstation roadmap. I worry too big to recover from.

So Sony just killed the PS4 with the Playstation Meeting announcements and heres several reasons why:

1 – No UHD Blu Ray player included

In what can only be described as a huge error and effectively leaving an open goal for Microsoft with the Xbox One , The PS4 Pro and the PS4 slim does not include an updated Blu Ray drive. In contrast the Xbox One S does and clearly will be a big factor in what makes this system move.

2 – PS4 Pro > More expensive than the PS4 launch price

The magical $399 price point has been missed. Now over £100 more expensive than the now standard PS4, the Pro offers only iterative improvements for a substantial price increase which hasn’t been sold to the consumer at all.

3 – The Design

Oh my god its hideous, for the benefit of 4K has come at the sacrifice of the once slick and cool PS4 thin design. Now the console looks like two slices of PS4 stuck together because its twice as powerful right?

4 – Wheres the Power

4K, it aint native and HDR is something every PS4 will benefit from through a hardware update so that leaves us with remaining specs such as increased GPU, however the exact figure hasn’t been revealed. However all specs do point towards pre event rumours that the Scorpio announced by Xbox is around 70% more powerful. Ouch Sony, Ouch.

5 – VR dead before launch

Cerny on stage stated that with farpoint the “standard game” effectively wont be as good as the PS4 Pro version as the pro version benefits from “double the pixels”. This almost sounds as ridiculous as Microsofts beautiful pixel statement but to be frank Sony have effectively said that if you want VR then get it on PS4 Pro because you will benefit form higher frame rates and pixel counts. I don’t know about you but if frame rates are being mentioned before a game is launched as a reason to upgrade then I’m already worried about the experience standard PS4 owners are going to get. In fact its made me cancel my pre order.
