Leo’s Fortune Review

Leo’s Fortune

Leo’s Fortune is a platform adventure game where you hunt down the cunning and mysterious thief that stole your gold. Was it your family? Let this beautiful side scroller unravel as you embark on a quest to retrieve your lost gold.

With a small install and low price for an ID game you could think it will be a little mediocre ID game but my oh my what a fun and addictive game this is. It need not capture 60fps visuals but what it captures is absolutely stunning for a side scrolling puzzle game.

You play as Leo a turquoise lump of hair with a moustache, and from the off I was reminded of similar games like Sonic and Kirby, you follow one path across 24 levels which are split in between five acts it’s very similar to the rating system in place with Angry Birds but you have to achieve a certain goal to move on, the aim of the acts are to complete each level with the most stars. For collecting all coins you gain a star, not dying once you get a star and beating the set time you get another star. My only issue is the time limit isn’t explained at the start of each level so you have to just get on with it and hope for the best at the end of each level.

Control are simple to pick up you move with the stick or the d-pad and only use the A & X button, the A button jumps and when held, Leo will expand like Kirby and float, the X button makes him heavy so you can use this move to use Leo as an anchor when jumping on a platform to elevate you to the higher ledge. The movement also works like Sonic when he goes between loops you will need to move the stick with Leo, so the ledge leans left you follow it until you’re clear.

If you finish the game which isn’t hard (literally took me around 3hrs) you unlock Hard-Core mode which adds extra challenges to the game and also beat the game without dying once and you will unlock a special prize, i kept dying so i do not understand what this is. What really makes this game stand out is that it is built for all ages although i can see some children may be getting frustrated if they can’t do it…like me although i am a big kid still.

It can frustrate when you’re playing and die from a silly mistake so patience is important, the only things that can kill you is sharp objects, Spiked cogs or falling from the platform. One issue that came up when i was playing through is the animation when Leo loses a life, there isn’t much there, he hits a spike or falls down and that’s it, no words, no sound no nothing. On the point of sound, it has a very mellow Fable like sound to it throughout the game, from a spring music on the opening levels to a darker, deeper sound for the underground levels.
