Things I love and hate about…Rise of the Tomb Raider

Loved – DLC Direction

I’m not advocating the implementation of season passes; let me be clear on that from the get go. I do however like the direction Crystal Dynamics have taken with the story DLC thus far. Both Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch and Cold Darkness Awakened offer a slightly different spin on the established campaign material found within the main game.

Baba Yaga, named after a witch in Russian folklore, sees our heroine infected with hallucinogenic pollen that allows the developers to be a little wilder in aesthetic, enemy design and paranormal visual representation than perhaps they usually would be. Cold Darkness Awakened on the other hand is more akin to a horror title with a pathogenic virus being released and foes being turned into “definitely not zombies”.

While you are acutely aware that nothing supernatural is actually happening in either both still serve as new ideas and feel as though the developers are testing the waters and experimenting which in my eyes is what DLC should be used for. Finish the main game and test out new things afterwards.

What do you think?
