Zheros Review

Welcome to a quirky cartoon based 3D action side scroller (bit of a mouthful). Zheros lets you take control of 2 heros trying to take down the armies of the villain Dr Vendetta, who has a very interesting (I think that’s the word) taste in fashion.

An intro cutscene watches Dr Vendetta start to send his army of robot enemies to take over a planet but, once his first army is taken down by the Zheros he then presses the button “send more army” which does exactly that. You then get thrown into action as you go through the many levels of defeating these robot soldiers of Dr V.

The game itself is very repetitive, it’s fun for a while but, it soon had me losing interest as I felt like i knew what was going to happen most of the time. A new set of enemies turning up, me having to bash them up, run, jump and roll to the next stage and repeat. I would recommend this for a younger audience, chuck another controller on and get the split screen local multiplayer going as well. I’m sure they will be glued to the screen for longer than me.

The characters that you can control are Mike and Dorian, Mike seems like the brute force of the team and a little bit dopey, especially seeing as when you go to choose him he’s sitting there picking his nose. Dorian on the other hand (the female character) seems like a flexible mixed martial artist who flips and kicks her way through the levels. Whilst playing through as either character you get the chance to upgrade 3 certain abilities such as: Their fighting power, shield power and how effective their gun is these are available after completing a level . There are 2 Worlds to complete (at the moment hopefully there will be DLC on the horizon), Sector Zero and the Wilderness which both have around 9 levels in each which can be walked through quite quickly. There are 3 difficulties to play on (easy, normal and hard), I’d suggest just chucking it on hard and testing yourself through the short campaign.

Rimlight Studios have done well to make the game easy to control with it taking seconds to learn the fighting combos. basic controls consist of “Y” being your heavy attack and “X” your light attack like in most button mashing games. “A” to jump, “B” to evade/roll out of the way of attacks and using the triggers “RT” to use your weapon and “LT” to block, pretty simple. Again this goes back to me saying this game would be great for the younger audience seeing as it is very simple to pick up.

“Zheros Takes me back to my Rachet and Clank days”

The game looks awesome, takes me back to my Rachet and Clank days, with the cool comic book style cartoon graphics. Very bright and vibrant explosions and pop ups to show you your combo multiplier. The sound is also good, being that there isn’t any vocal sounds there are plenty to represent the countless explosions and fighting aspects. Music wise there is a techno/drum and bass styled music across the menus and during the game, definitely fits in with the sci-fi, action, superhero game type.
