Ubisoft Explains Why Tom Clancy’s The Division is Set in Midtown Manhattan

Quite a lot of information about Tom Clancy’s The Division came to light earlier this week, among which was the revelation that the game was only going to be based in a single borough of New York – Midtown Manhattan. Back when it was first revealed at E3 2013, The Division‘s demo showed off Brooklyn, which is no longer an in-game location. Explaining its decision to stick to Midtown Manhattan, Ubisoft said that it was down to 1-to-1 recreation but that the game will feature a huge open-world experience.

For Tom Clancy’s The Division we are going with Midtown Manhattan. It is because of the 1 to 1 re-creation and the way the pandemic has [happened]. Basically, everything has been hit and there are no more resources because everyone tried to get out. There is no more gasoline in the cars, there is no traffic, you’re on foot.

With the level of detail we have, doing Midtown Manhattan is a huge open-world experience and more than enough to sink your teeth into. It is a very sizable open-world game.

Ubisoft hasn’t said if more boroughs will be introduced through DLC or expansions, but for now, all we know is that The Division will launch with just one borough on March 8. A beta test for the game will begin on January 29.
