The much-anticipated sequel to Respawn Entertainment’s Robot Fighting First Person shooter features more Titans, More free running and a grappling hook which is a solid selling point for a game competing with the big shots of Battlefield and Call of Duty, but can Titanfall 2 hold its own in the ring?
The Sequel features something that the first was missing, a single player campaign. You play as new pilot Jack Cooper and his titan ‘BT’ as you fight for the Militia to stop the IMC from taking over the galaxy. The story is tried and tested but that isn’t what the selling point is. The dynamic between Cooper and BT is great. Periodically you are given 2 speech options to learn more about your surroundings or the characters themselves which help fans of the franchise and those who are new get a better understanding of the world you are playing in. Titans in the original when just cannon fodder but in Titanfall 2 they have personality, they make jokes and like long walks on the beach (okay…maybe not that one). It makes the relationship much more fun to watch develop and you stop seeing BT as a giant robot and more of a person. The level design of Titanfall 2 fits both the movement system and the size of the titans perfectly, never sacrificing one for the other.
The Titan segments are fun battles between you and other titans whilst Infantry sections give plenty of options for a mix of movement and gunplay. Neither overpowers the other so players who prefer one or the other will find plenty to enjoy in the campaign.
The Multiplayer builds upon the first game’s flaws to make a well-rounded choice of game modes and playstyles. One of the main complaints of the first game was the limited choice of weapons and customization options, Respawn obviously heard these cries and have added many weapons from a twin barreled SMG to a laser LMG. Each weapon handles differently and there is something for everyone. They have also added more game modes that also build upon the predecessor’s lack of variety. Now there are game modes that don’t allow Titans, ones that remove the AI roaming the map. If you had a problem with something in the first game then it has more the likely been fixed in the latest iteration.
The original Titanfall was one of my favourite FPS games of all time, it was unique and fresh and spawned many of the features that we love in other shooters such as advanced movement systems and superfluid gameplay however now it has been the unfortunate victim of the industry as other games have built upon these ideas, making Titanfall less unique even though it is the father of the ‘new’ Sci-fi genre. Due to this, the game already lacks the player count it deserves and the Sales that it should have been getting.
