Rebel Galaxy Review

Rebel Galaxy developed by Double Damage Games is a swashbuckling space adventure, with action-packed combat, exploration, discovery, trade, and “negotiation” with the outlandish denizens at the edge of the known universe.

As the commander of an immensely powerful star destroyer, you’ll battle pirates, explore anomalies, befriend aliens, scavenge battle wreckage, mine asteroids, and discover artifacts. Choose your path as a roguish do-gooder, crafty space-trader or power-hungry privateer – or maybe a little of each! Buy larger and more powerful craft with your hard-earned credits, and outfit them with a variety of wicked weapons and defenses. Set in a galaxy of fantastic sights, and secrets to be found, Rebel Galaxy is above all a space epic of adventure, exploration, and combat. The edge of the universe is a pretty dangerous place, so watch your back.

I really enjoy the concept of this game even though I do think it’s a bit hard to get started out on it without getting blown up, the battles you can have are pretty good aswell seeing all these ships flying around like crazy people trying to kill you reminds me of living back in Penge, London UK.

I really like the fact that on occasion  when a ship is going to attack you you can receive a hail transmission (in game comms system) which gives you a chance to talk it out this might mean you can simply intimidate them or hand over your cargo to avoid conflict but then again where is the fun in that??? So just be ready for a fight pretty much anytime you see a ship.

A good aspect of Rebel Galaxy is that  you can choose how to play for instance you can play the game as a pirate, trader, miner or bounty hunter even though it’s unofficial as you don’t really get to choose it’s just more of the missions you can go for really gives the game that added depth.

The graphics to this game are great especially for a game costing only £15.99 or $19.99 you really do feel like you’re flying around space like when you go into hyper drive and then have to brake sharpish as you could enter an asteroid field or into the rubble of a blown up ship which is a nice touch.

The battle system reminds me of the ship warfare on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag where you would attack the enemy ships with your cannons although you can’t jump across and kill the crew at their helm this is however as I really enjoyed that aspect of the game, the characters you meet range from military to pirates to aliens all speaking their own tongue which I like although I’m  not to sure how the character can understand them all but why not.

I am not over keen on the fact that you don’t see the person you’re playing as, you just start on a ship and that’s it you go from there, you do play a male character from what I can gather from the in game dialogue whether you’re human or not it could be another thing, the other thing I am not overly keen on is the fact that you can go to any docking station and go to the bar and you will see the same generic bartender every time, would of been nice to change it up just a little bit really to demonstrate the variety of the docking stations in the universe

There are a lot of choices in the game like the different ships you can buy but how you want to kit them out with weapons is down to you, there are multiple weapons ranging from lasers, cannons and beams all good choices but depends on your play style, you also get an array of broadside weapons which are stronger of course with a choice of three different types of cannons with an upgrade for each, you can also upgrade you tractor beam, cargo hold, shields, hull, deflector and boosters the list could go on, but if and when you are bored of your ship you can choose from another five you can buy ranging from light fast ships to absolute tanks with a ridiculous amount of firepower and defence options.

You can stick to the main story if you want or you can explore the very vast Galaxy which is full of side missions, pirates and cargo etc. The different Galaxy or rather areas of the Galaxy have different people in power which is cool like you could be getting ambushed by one group and then one of the factions that like you could possibly turn up and lend a hand “It’s good having friends in the right places”

Rebel Galaxy has one of the best soundtracks I have heard in a game for a long while and is one it’s best features I love the music when you’re just traveling and then how it changes when you’re in a battle,  when you’re going into hyper drive you can hear the boosters charging up then you’re off, the sounds of the cannons going off is great the sound off when you blow up an enemy ship is great it really gives that space odyssey feel.

So the actual game play is easy if you played Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, if not you may struggle just a bit but within an hour or two you will have it down to a tee, the weapons can be a bit fiddly swapping between weapons but that can be changed by setting them to the AI who will then take charge of the side weapons so u can concentrate on the broadside weapons which is a nice touch.

I am not to over keen on the fact that all you can do is really go left or right, backwards and forwards, I would have liked to be able to barrel rolls and stuff like that while in combat just like Han Solo did in Empire Strikes Back, ducking and weaving through the asteroids.

The trading system in the game is cool and a little bit confusing at times as you could go out and find a high sale price item that is at a high price for 24hrs but there is not in-game time system that allows you to calculate the time passed and by the time you get back home the time has expired hence why you lose money as it loses value. This can be rather annoying, but to be fair I have been going round and doing bounties myself and have found it’s a lot easier to make money that way but of course the choice is yours

You can also visit any of the docking stations to look at the news feed to find little hidden gems like a big shipment of rum or other shipments that could be yours to sell and reap rewards for yourself.

You can only have five active missions at one time so it’s up to you what you take on and in which order that you do them in, you can get an array of missions from any docking station but also you can just be flying around and happen to come across a ship in need of aid and you can help them or not it’s up to you.
