Not a Hero: Super Snazzy Edition Xbox One Review

In your quest for global domination where do you start? Politics of course. But this is not just your average political party, this is a time traveling guy aptly named Bunnylord, due to his appearance of a mask with bunny ears. He hails from the future on a mission to save the world from nuclear disaster by telling everyone he needs to be elected to stop the threat, and how does he do this? Well he brings out a Super Snazzy edition of his previously released game and launches it on Xbox One throws in some extra bits and allows you to shoot, slide and joke your way to Power.

Not a Hero: Super Snazzy Edition for Xbox One is a 2D horizontal scrolling shooter that after a few minutes of a training level, gets you right into the action of high paced, quick beats of 80’s style retro music killing with, if done right, plenty of executions and over the top killing. Initially you’re provided with the first of 9 unlockable characters in the base game named Steve, Steve is a funny little guy, Bunnylords best friend and likes to kill for his boss. When I mean kill I mean KILL. This is done via character traits that each character possesses, such as fast reload, shoot to blow open doors, slide tackle enemies and my personal favourite is a trait possessed by Jesus, which is moving executions. This not only allows the more experienced player to keep things moving but helps on completing particular timed based challenges on some levels.

Each level showcases the games brilliant humour with some on screen dialogue to set the scene for why you are brainlessly killing some enemies. Its all about making your way up the ranks and seizing your moment of power but little did you know the enemy variations on your way to such power would be so good.

NotAHeroSuperSnazzyEd_09The gameplay is utterly addictive and fast paced. Level restarts you will become all too accustomed to as you hone your skills and attempt each of the levels unique challenges. Playing on the Xbox One controller feels supper slick and reviewing this on the Xbox One using my Elite controller was fantastic flicking the trigger toggle for some fast shooting is a top tip to succeed in this game.

“Steve is a funny little guy, Bunnylords best friend and likes to kill for his boss”

NotAHeroSuperSnazzyEd_04As you progress through the levels you soon learn it’s a lot more than just a duck and cover 2D side scroller. The enemies have variations in movement and attacks. It takes some practice to understand these and the choice the game throws at you between speed and patience is constant. Knowing what enemies are most vulnerable to in terms of your movements and what the best attack is crucial. I have been sliced numerous times by crazy ninjas! In the main though enemies are taken down by a variation in slick gunplay and slide takedowns. Get these moments right and bagging a long kill streak delivers one of the sweetest feelings in gaming.

To help provide even more fun and push you the player towards speeding things up a notch many enemies will drop pickups which can alter the type of ammunition you have at your disposal. Go for the Nadeshot and blow your enemies to pieces or go for the laser beam and watch them fritter away to oblivion it’s all good fun. Don’t reload though as that resets your ammo back to normal in all but one instance I found.

NotAHeroSuperSnazzyEd_06There are 21 levels to complete and a few secret ones to take the total to 24, to which you can get to through certain hidden doors. If you don’t try to complete every challenge in every level you can play this game for a good few hours, but I do believe the challenges are there to prolong gameplay some more with the extra characters too.

Not a Hero is the ultimate in giving you a quick hit of fun gun touting goodness. During my review I kept plugging away level by level and its pick and play nature is really accessible. So for Not a Hero Super Snazzy Edition on Xbox One the developers have gone one further and provided some additional levels and even the ability to control Bunnylord himself which is well worth it as the experience of that characters gameplay is on another level of brilliance.
