Dead Rising 4 – Review

Dead Rising 4 is set one year after the events of Dead Rising 3 and 16 years after the initial outbreak which was captured by our protagonist Frank West. Not a lot has changed gameplay wise since the first release of Dead Rising back in 2006, but the game has gone from strength to strength in terms of story and humor.

So seeing that we’re back controlling Frank West a reporter looking for the best story, it is obvious that he’s role is to capture the events so back using his camera can lead to some hilarious moments in the game and it also aids as an investigation tool to break into areas and also see in the dark thanks to some special filters added by his friend Vick.

We begin the game with Frank and Vick investigating a missile silo, as there are reports of some strange goings on being held there. To the shock and awe to players, it is zombies but they’re being cloned and experimented on. As you uncover what is happening at the missile silo you uncover too much and Vick can’t control herself and decides to have a meltdown which results in the pair separating with the end conclusion being she drives off and leaves you there.

Fast forward a few months later and Frank is being framed for the assault on the silo and is a wanted man, on the run he changes his name and is teaching a night class when Brad who works for ZBD asks for your help in uncovering the outbreak that happened on black Friday back in the new mall in yep you guessed it Willamette, Colorado. So Frank is back where it all began.

Throughout the game I was laughing with the silly weapons you can combine, drive around in a go-kart or a tricycle and killing zombies is hilarious. A lot of the old weapons are back and some new weapons have been added The Electric Axe is a must have, the combo you get is amazing as well. It really makes you feel and look like Thor. You can combine as many weapons as you like as long as you have the blueprints, these are made easier to find now with a map available for purchase which is new…well to me it is.

You still have to clear out hideouts to use as save points but now you no longer have to walk the survivors you collect on the way to the save point like a stressed out father. They go on their own accord.

You still have the crazy people one of my favorites was the lads in the medieval area, all dressed in a suit of armor and talking like they all live in ye olde days. There are certain weapons you can’t lift unless you have an exo-suit which is acquired in the supply drop off points from the security team that is taking control of the mall. The exo-suit like the cars has a life meter which is either the power or battery…so making the most of them is key.

dead-rising-4-5I felt the level up system in this is really quick and easy, I found myself at level 19 after about 1 hour, I was destroying anything walking in front of me. But it just felt easy and the skills can increase the ease also, you have four trees to skill up, Brawling, Fortitude, Shooting, and Survival. Each skill point only requires one point which really makes it quite easy to level up. I also found taking pictures of an F*** ton of zombies gets you loads of PP too.

The humor in the game is dry but it seriously gives Frank so much character and is hilarious, I did a time trial riding a go-kart and Frank’s running commentary is just funny as hell. His one liners are immense as well.

The world is open this time as if you remember in Dead Rising 1 you could only walk around the mall, but in the last game being Dead Rising 3 you had a bigger area to explore, vehicles are key here and you really rack up the kills in some of the hilarious vehicles you can construct.

One flaw I have found with Dead Rising 4 is the zombies just don’t compare to the last installment, I mean there are the fresh zombies that have glowing red eyes and run at you but it just seems that all the game is walking around a zombie infested mall ranking up combos killing endless amounts of zombies. On that note when you’re on a killing spree frank will have blood effects on his clothes but after like 1 minute it vanishes. Pretty poor if you ask me in this day and age of games.

Multiplayer is as the same as last year’s, multiplayer is just co-op which will really make the game that much easy.

Dead Rising 4 was reviewed on the Xbox One and was supplied to TVG by Xbox.

Dead Rising 4
Feels like a rehash of the first Dead Rising
I had fun playing Dead Rising 4 but i just felt like a different cover on the last game just with some added humour, the story isn’t that believable and i felt the could of done so much better with Frank than they did. Yes he is funny and witty but that can’t be the saving grace for a game.
