Blast ‘Em Bunnies Review

Sometimes gamers just don’t know what kind of title they are in the mood for. Do they want to immerse themselves in a deep narrative experience, a grind play session to upgrade weapons and level up or just a fun distraction to pass away the time? Blast ‘Em Bunnies can potentially offer you two out of three.

You take control of a solitary bunny manning a turret on a farm. For some reason, a horde of military trained ‘evil bunnies’ are all descending on your location. There is no reason why or what objective revealed for either side in this setup but that’s not really needed. Despite the use of adorable furry creatures armed with various vegetables as weapons it is not completely family friendly. Mostly when a deranged looking bunny appears on occasion holding a baby rabbit and a bloodied knife and you must take him out quickly to save the animal infant’s life. It is an unusually sinister part of the game that adds dark humour to what looks like on the surface a cartoon shooter.

There are only two different modes – survival in which you try and survive as long as possible and slaughter, a two-minute round of invulnerability to concentrate on taking out as many enemies in the allotted time. Enemies drop coins once defeated which are in turn used to upgrade weapons health and also level up. Starting off with a carrot rifle, the main weapon can be upgraded to fire homing parsnips or changed for a runner bean laser beam. Levelling up offers up a number of missions such as taking out a number of a certain type of enemy which in turn rewards even more coins and games are almost always improved by having players collect coins.

The gameplay loop is pleasantly satisfying and addictive even though it doesn’t progress towards anything too sophisticated. Survival rounds are not repeated in the exact same manner each time meaning certain types enemies won’t turn up in a specific order. It allows to keep each attempt somewhat fresh in its own way, particularly just when a boss could appear just a handful of rounds in or deep into the double figures. It is a shame that different arenas are only unlockable by paying extra for them as even though you don’t move around the environment, a change of scenery every now and then would be good.
