8 of the Best Dark Souls 3 Bosses

  1. Aldrich, Devourer of Gods

Another figure in the lore you learn about almost immediately within Dark Souls 3 is Aldrich, Devourer of Gods. Throughout our adventure we learn that he decided that he was fed up with the direction of the current gods and so decided to take them on, forging ahead with his own ideals and taking their powers in the process. His very appearance contains numerous nods to the previous games and I don’t just mean the fact that he wears Gwyndolin’s crown. Being one of the Lords of Cinder and the fact that by his very nature and lore he’s a wealth of information for fans of the series is one thing however it’s also the lead up to the battle which makes me love the culmination with this boss. After completing the previous area and learning that we are actually in the realm of Anor Londo from Dark Souls was insane enough in itself but to actually see the area from the first in a completely new take and years in the future once desecrated and dilapidated was fantastic.

  1. Dancer of the Boreal Valley

The Dancer is somewhat of a surprise encounter to players the first time through the game. Upon defeating the third Lord of Cinder which will either be Aldrich or Yhorm depending on how you’ve tackled the game you immediately get teleported back to the High Wall of Lothric area, specifically the Lothric Castle entrance where the NPC High Priestess Emma gave you the banner which originally let you leave the opening area. Upon arrival you will note that Emma is gone and the Dancer materialises out of thin air. The way in which she almost falls into existence reminded me strongly of the One Reborn from Bloodborne who similarly spilled into existence. This is special for two reasons: the first being the surprise factor as let’s not forget this is immediately on the back of defeating a Lord of Cinder whom by their own right are tough battles and second is the fact that the Dancer of the Boreal Valley is a special enemy. The way in which she glides around the arena and unpredictably sweeps, slashes and strikes at you is incredibly hard to read the first few times you face her. It’s a tense encounter and one that forces you to be aggressive at the right times, we also learn of a connection to Pontiff Sulyvahn who may have exiled her previously. Speaking of the Pontiff…
