5 Reasons PlayStation VR will fail

As an early adopter of almost all gaming tech I can stretch my wallet too the announcement that PlayStation VR will arrive in the US and UK on October 13th has sparked me with a renewed sense of excitement for the technology. It finally feels like the buzz and hype is coming to an end and we can finally look forward to a new chapter in gaming the arrival of VR. However is Playstation VR destined for failure? We look at 5 reasons why it just might be.

1 – The launch window

playstation-vr-release-date-696x392October is slap bang in the middle of crazy season for gamers with all the triple A titles for first party and third party developers hitting the shelves. To date there’s only really one Triple A title that is landing on the Playstation VR which is developed by Sony and that’s Rigs. The others are frankly tech demos dressed up to showcase the technologies capabilities hoping it entices future purchases However, will PlayStation gamers choose a PSVR headset and game for about £400 or spend that figure grabbing huge titles such as Titanfall 2, Watch Dogs 2, The Last Guardian, Gran Turismo, Battlefield 1 or many others.

2 – Where are the games?

PSVR-GDC-2016-369.0.0E3 2016 seen Shaun Lyden proudly announce 50 games at launch for PSVR but rather than showing what’s arriving at launch Sony took the decision to reveal two new games at E3 which although big names in the form of Batman Arkham VR and Resident Evil Biohazard signalling strong third party support they didn’t spend anytime discussing their first party lineup. We know to date there is a tech demo in the form of Playstation VR worlds and various other smaller titles. The big missing piece was their only Triple A VR game previously shown, where was Rigs?  Not only is the first party support a bit thin on the ground at present we haven’t seen much gameplay of the titles and this lack of exposure could hamper hardware and software sales. To be fair it’s not exactly the best thing to demo so finding somewhere to try it is your next hurdle to cross.

3 – That Neo thing is just round the corner

playstation_vr_release_date_rigs_renderAlready announced the Playstation Neo or PS4K is set to be the machine that really supports Playstation VR. Now at present there is no date for this consoles release but with widespread reports pinning it from November this year to as far back as the drawing board then consumers may have a long wait on their hands to get the console that will truly deliver a worthwhile experience so this may hamper sales post launch as consumers hold off.
