Killer Instinct Ultra Edition Season 3 Review

The Ultimate Season 3 Bundle! Get early access to fighters! Includes 8 new fighters – including Rash from Battletoads, Arbiter from Halo, Kim Wu, and Tusk!

Killer ToadKiller Instinct Season 3 is the third set of fighters for the immensely popular fighting game on the Xbox One. In this Season 3 you get:

  • Mira– A Vampire fighter with the unique ability to heal mid fight.
  • Kim Wu–  A very fast fighter with a dragon she can use on combat
  • Tusk– A Nordic fighter with a brutish Sword
  • Arbiter– The Halo Sidekick with an Energy Sword
  • Rash– Battletoads mascot and all round badass
  • Gargos–  a demon overlord
  • RAAM– Gears of War 1 Antagonist (Out Soon)

Each of the characters plays very different and keeps the experience fresh and interesting with every fight which is essential for keeping the combat from getting stale. I’m not much of a fighting game person myself however Killer Instinct was easy to get into and get very attached to.

Gameplay is Killer Instinct’s holy grail. It is flawless. Its quick and precise. The game favours combos and interesting movesets which makes every fight feel different. Having such a great roster of fighters and being able to customise their looks and colours really keeps the replay value high. I only wanted to play a few games and ended up with around 25 matches played. Killer Instinct is addictive and unforgiving. Missing a block or dodge can end the match instantly which kept the fights very tense and a thrilling race to get large combos and finishers. The game does include a few ways to practise such as an arena to test combos and such (A standard for fighting games) and a dojo that teaches the various techniques in the game which makes it much better for beginners

Graphics are not usually very important for a fighting game but Rare thought otherwise as each of the new characters are stunning to look at, each with their own flair and design. None of the characters is even remotely similar to another as each has their own move set and movements that are all very smooth and concise so you can rack up the highest combos quickly. The graphics on these new characters is a step up from those included is Season 1 and 2. The only issue I found with the graphics is that when you start to build a combo, it can be hard to track what is going on especially with characters such as Mira who can teleport around the screen. This didn’t get in the way of me enjoying the game however.

Sound is very important in a fighting game as it is nice to feel the impact of each blow to really get you into it. Killer Instinct does this very well and I mean very well. Every hit has a significant impact sound and graphic to go along with it and hearing the announcer shout “Brutal!” whenever you rack up a combo is always satisfying. Even Blocking feels good when the signature “C-C-C-Combo Breaker” is bellowed in the arena, it really motivates you to start playing the game very seriously (that might just be me though)

Killer Instinct Season 3 is currently priced at £15.99 which nets you all 8 fighters and future season 3 content whilst each of the characters can be bought for 3.99 each.
