Growing up in a house full of cats you quickly realise how much of a jerk a cat can actually be, by this I mean if you have anything that’s not stuck down it will inevitably end up on the floor. Now this does get even more frustrating when you look at your lovely pet and he or she looks straight back and knocks whatever is in front of them onto the floor. That is the aim of the game from Catlateral Damage. It is a first person, physics based, cat simulator. Your only goal is to knock off as much stuff on to the floor in multiple rooms as quick as possible within the allotted time.
You simply kick off with a very quick tutorial which shows you how to move, jump and swipe. The controls are very quick and simple to get hold of which is very handy when running round a house jumping on everything just to swipe things off. There is two games modes so far, one is the Objective mode in which you have a time limit to knock as much stuff off and gain points in doing so. You are given a target set number of pieces and if you don’t reach that it’s game over kitty! The second mode is aptly named Litterbox mode, in which its ultimate destruction for the many rooms you can run around.
I’m totally guessing that the game developer Chris Chung and Fire Hose Games loves their cats… I could be totally wrong but when you have over 200 pictures of cats to find in the multiple levels, you must love them. These are collected by, yes you’ve guessed it, knocking the pictures on the floor. From hanging pictures to framed pictures on many surfaces. There is upgrades to collect during the game for your jump, swipe and speed, all used to move about quicker and to knock items off faster. There is a few more upgrades that included severe boosts to everything but the joy will be getting them. There is also a few normal house levels and a few themed areas like the and the Pawliday Den (Christmas time for most of us).
In addition to vary up the gameplay there’s random events such as catch the mouse, disco, power cut or moon gravity which are all aways of adding a little extra crazy to your experience. Beyond just avoiding boredom there’s several easy trophies up for grabs if that floats your boat and a fairly attainable platinum.
This game is a very different take on the first person gaming, with, I can imagine, cat lovers really enjoying the aspect of just being a jerk and knocking anything and everything to the floor but it sadly does not offer the long term playability. Because it’s so simple it lacks the need to keep returning. Don’t get me wrong though it does offer a great aspect of being a cat and can be quite fun if it’s your thing.
